Emoticon HQ Quick Facts: Pidgin Formerly Known as Gaim

Pidgin, formerly known as GAIM is a multi-protocol Instant Message client that works by allowing you to use almost all of your IM accounts at once. When you open Pidgin, you are able to choose which IM account you want to log into (choose as many as you want) and all of your buddies, friends, and contacts will be available to chat with. Pidgin comes with its own emoticon set, but it is very easy to replace this with a set you are more fond of. For example, a few simple changes of the code will let you import a Yahoo! emoticon set and use the emoticon shortcut keys standard with that Yahoo! set. Pidgin works with the following Instant Message (IM) accounts: AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, and Zephyr.

Adding Free Emoticons to Pidgin (Gaim)

When you download new emoticons for Pidgin, it is very easy to add them to your basic smiley set, or to replace your standard smilies with your new emoticon downloads. At Emoticon HQ, we have tons of free emoticons to download and use on almost any standard instant Messenger, but with Pidgin, things end up 10 times easier! Rather than downloading emoticons for your MySpace IM, Yahoo! IM, MSN, AIM and more, all you need to do is download your smiley sets to your computer and place them in the Pidgin smileys folder. Then you'll have emoticons for all of the Instant Message accounts you run through Pidgin. Replacing your smiley in Pidgin is easy:

For Linux Users:

1. Located the Pidgin smileys directory - /usr/share/pixmaps/gaim/smileys/default (or) /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/smileys/default
2. Place your new free emoticons into the default folder
3. Edit the theme file (modify the file /usr/share/pixmaps/gaim/smileys/default/theme (or) /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/smileys/default/theme by entering the filenames of the smilies (or emoticons) you downloaded and the shortcut keys (or hot key) you want to associate with the emoticon
4. Activate newly-added smileys - You have to disable your default smiley theme and then enable it again. Go to Tools > Preferences > Conversations > Smiley Themes. Choose "None" then close Pidgin. Reponne Pidgen, open the Preferences again and choose "Default Theme." This will re-enable your new emoticon set.

For Windows Users:

1. Follow the same steps above. To access your default smileys folder, go to Files\Gaim\pixmaps\gaim\smileys\default (or) Files\Pidgin\pixmaps\pidgin\smileys\default.
2. Follow steps 2-4 above
