Emoticon HQ Quick Facts: Google Talk Emoticons

When GOOGLE got into the email market, they integrated chat as part of their basic email service, Gmail ™. As a mail client, Gmail is hard to beat with an organized UI that delivers Google Mail, Calendar, Documents, Photos, Groups, Web, & More! Through Gmail, you can integrate all of these services to stay in touch with friends, and even manage a small business! Though Gmail still claims itself as a Beta tool, it's clearly taking over the market in both email and IM chat. In fact, Google now includes Google Talk ™ (instant messaging service) as part of Google Desktop with a popout Instant Messenger window that maintains the Google simplicity while mimicking the basic necesities of instant messaging.

Google Talk began as a very bare bones, almost organic chat service with text based smilies (ASCII) that suprisingly animated once you hit enter. IM members are quite used to a text based smily (emoticon) turning into a round yellow animated smiley face when they hit enter on traditional IM platforms. This is why taking that text and simply moving it 90 degrees was very unexpected. Another unexpected aspect is that the Google Talk emoticons animate for a few seconds after they rotate that 90 degrees. Today, Gmail has improved even more and has stepped Google Talk up to the next level. Maintaining its organic routes, Google Talk defaults at animating the basic text (standard emoticon set) as shown below. What few pay attention to is the small smily icon in the lower right hand corner of Google Talk. Click on this icon, and you'll find that there are 2 other sets of Google Talk Emoticons: Circular graphic smilies and regtangular graphic smilies.
